Leica introduced the SF 40 around 2015 as a smaller, travel-friendly alternative to the SF 58, aimed at M and T-system shooters who wanted TTL fill without the bulk of a pro-sized strobe. At its 105mm zoom setting, the SF 40 reaches a guide number of 40 meters at ISO 100 (roughly 131 feet), which is enough for most fill and indoor work. The zoom head is motorized and covers 24 to 105mm, with a pull-out panel that widens the beam to 16mm. The head tilts up to 90 degrees and rotates a full 360 for bounce flash in any direction. It runs on four AA batteries, which give you somewhere between 220 and 1,700 flashes per set depending on power, and it recycles between shots in anywhere from a tenth of a second to four seconds. You get TTL metering, manual control from full power down to 1/256, high-speed sync, slow sync, 1st and 2nd curtain sync, wireless TTL slave mode, a built-in AF assist beam, and a nine-step LED video light that runs about 3.5 hours on fresh batteries. At 203 grams, it mounts cleanly on an M body without crowding the rangefinder patch or unbalancing a 35 or 50 Summicron, and the two dials on the back with color-coded pilot indicators let you change modes and power settings without diving into a menu.
